Setting Up a New Computer

If you have a new computer that was recently installed, this page gives step-by-step instructions on how to set it up.

If you have any futher problems that are not listed, please fill out a Service Request form and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Adding a Printer

To add a printer, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Start - Printers and Faxes.
  2. A new window titled 'Printers and Faxes' will pop up. In the blue pane on the top-left, click 'Add a Printer'
  3. Another window titled 'Add Printer Wizard' will appear. Click Next
  4. Of the 2 options available, select the second one labeled 'A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer' and click Next
  5. On the next page, the first option labeled 'Find a printer in the directory' should already be selected. If not, select it and press Next
  6. A new window should appear again:
  7. Now (physically) go to the printer that you would like to add and find its name. The first 2-4 letters should correspond with your building.For example, printers in Brody complex are tagged BDY-Printer.
  8. After you have found the name, copy it into the 'Name' field and click OK.
  9. Wait a minute or so while the computer adds the printer.
  10. After the printer has been added, the next page will ask if you would like to set it as the default printer. Choose your preferred option and click Next.
  11. You are now done.

Setting a Default Printer

This section is to change a default printer. If you need to add a printer, please refer to the previous section.

To change your default printer to another one:

  1. Go to Start - Printers and Faxes
  2. In the new window, find the icon of the printer that you would like to be the new default printer.
  3. Right click on it and select 'Set as Default Printer'
  4. You are now done.

Applying Group Policy Update

    1. Go to Start - All Programs - RHS - Information Services - Group Policy Updates
    2. A black window titled Group Policy Update will appear
    3. Wait for the process to go through. It will take a couple of minutes
    4. When it is finished, it will whether or not you would like to restart the computer
Refreshing Policy...User Policy Refresh has completedComputer Policy Refresh has completedCertain User Policies are enabled that can only run during logon.Certain Computer policies are enabled that can only run during startup.Ok to Reboot?. <Y/N>Ok to logoff?. <Y/N>
  1. Type the appropriate response of 'y' or 'no' (case does not matter) and hit Enter
  2. You are not required to restart the computer right away, so it is okay to press 'n' You are not required to logoff your account, so it is okay to press 'n' again However, if you are in a situation that requires the update immediately, the press 'Y' as your responses.

Setting Up Display for 2 Monitors

If you have 2 monitors that are displaying the same screen, then follow these instructions

  1. Go to the desktop and right click anywhere on the screen
  2. Hover over to 'Graphics Options' - 'Ouput To' - 'Extended Desktop'
  3. You should have 2 options displayed here, 'Monitor + Digital Display' and 'Digital Display + Monitor'
  4. Select the first option but if that reverses your desktop, simply select the other option

Remove Startup Notifications

This section shows how to remove the bubble notifications when logging into an account.

  • To stop displaying the yellow bubble that asks you to take a tour of Windows XP:Simple click on the bubble. In the new window that opens, click Cancel.Now whenever you login, you should never have that yellow bubble appear.
  • If you are asked to connect to a server for Microsoft Lync, follow these steps, simply check the box to always connect to the server.Then click Ok.Now whenever you login, Microsoft Lync should never ask you for which server to connect.
